A New Tongue

Read Acts 1:1 through 2:47

Open mouth, insert foot. It was the story of Tabitha’s life. No matter how she tried to remember to phrase her words carefully, she usually ended up just letting them tumble out. Some people found her annoying, or even worse, rude.

For obvious reasons, Tabitha’s favorite Bible character was Peter. She could identify with someone who shot off his mouth without thinking. She knew that Peter was really a lot smarter than what he sounded like when he spoke. She understood his “Did-I-say-that?” moments. So imagine Tabitha’s surprise when she noticed one day while reading Acts 2 that her foot-in-mouth buddy’s sermon was downright eloquent. It had never struck her before, but now it was obvious: something had happened to Peter.

We know what changed this trigger-tempered disciple. He had yielded full control of his mouth to God, first to speak in tongues, then to respond to the accusation of drunkenness with a well-reasoned and impassioned speech. God had transformed his weakness into strength.

Challenge for Today: Give God control of your most embarrassing weakness by yielding yourself fully to the Holy Spirit.
